I would hardly call an optical drive a necessity these days, but many IT managers are reluctant to part ways with legacy features. Unlike the HP 5330M, the V131 is equipped with two USB 3.0 ports, which supports transfer rates 10 times the speed of USB 2.0. Its HDMI port, multimedia card slot, VGA, Ethernet, and Webcam are features that can also be found in the Dell 3350 and HP 5330M. The 500GB hard drive isn’t the biggest one available on the V131 (it goes up to 750GB), but few professionals will require more storage than that. In addition to the standard 802.11n Wi-Fiand Bluetooth, the V131 can also be configured with 3G Mobile Broadband (with GSM or CDMA technologies)—a feature that’s more common in an enterprise-class laptop like the Lenovo X220.

The XPS 15z’s feature set is comparable to, if not better than, that of the MacBook Pro 15-inch. All three USB ports support advanced technologies: two of them USB 3.0, the other eSATA as well as USB 2.0. The XPS 15z has jacks for both HDMI and Mini DisplayPort (for a dual-monitor hookup), whereas laptops like the MacBook Pro 15-inch, HP Pavilion dv6-6170us, and Samsung RC512-S02 come with one or the other. Legacy users won’t find a VGA port or modem jack, however. The standard webcam doesn’t shoot video in high definition like the ones found on the MacBook Pro 15-inch and XPS 15. And although the slot-loading DVD burner is a nice aesthetic touch, Blu-ray drives aren’t available yet. (You’ll need to upgrade to the XPS 15 to get one.) The 500GB hard drive isn’t as spacious as the 750GB one on the last 15z we reviewed, but it still offers plenty of storage for the typical user. Speaker grilles can be found on either side of the keyboard, and they face upwards so that sound blasts directly at your face. It’s a better-sounding system than the one the MacBook Pro uses, but lacks the subwoofer that improves bass on the XPS 15.

There are two items on the X775′s feature list that are worth pointing out immediately. The Blu-ray drive may not be that rare, but it’s a praise-worthy complement to the 1080p HD screen. You can hook it up to a living room HDTV using the built-in HDMI port, and watch your Blu-ray flicks on a big screen. Then there’s the X775′s pair of 5,400rpm hard drives: They have capacities of 500GB and 750GB, for a total of 1.25TB. One of them is a hybrid, which means it contains 4GB of flash storage that loads the operating system so it boots in an instant. The X775 is USB 3.0 ready, though that’s only the case with one of its four USB ports. The M17X and Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) have two USB 3.0 ports apiece.
