The Dell Optiplex 790 runs on 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Dell also offers a 90 percent efficient power supply option for all Optiplex 790 models, which helps even further with its Energy Star 5.0 compliance. The fact that the desktop was built using at least 10 percent recycled plastic also helps it meet EPEAT Gold standards. The 20-inch-high ODE Level 3 has a simple and clean look. The plastic window on the right side lets you see the neatly arranged interior: Wires are routed beneath the motherboard tray, and red internal lighting shows off all your components, even in the dark. The chassis is airflow friendly, with a perforated top grate to let the hot air escape naturally, and a liquid-cooling system for the CPU (also by Corsair) and several fans also present. Ports on the top of the PC include four USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 port, audio and mic jacks, and FireWire 400. On the rear panel you’ll find even more ports, including four DVI-I, two HDMI, and two DisplayPort; eight USB 2.0; FireWire 400; eSATA; power eSATA; and audio jacks. There are also two USB 3.0 ports in the back, but one is occupied by a plug connected to the front-panel port with a pass-through cable. This is common, as cases don’t commonly connect those ports to motherboard headers, but it’s still an awkward and unattractive solution.

The Gateway DX4850-45u’s glossy black mid-tower chassis is virtually identical to that of the Gateway DX4850-27eu . It has the same light-up ring encircling the front panel and large backlit Gateway logo. The media card reader protrudes from the top of the system, as if it’s reaching out and accepting the media cards from your camera. The top of the system has an indented tray to hold your devices (such as cameras and iPods), and routing channels for their USB cables hidden behind a flip-up door. Speaking of which, there are a plentiful ten USB 2.0 ports all over the system, but no USB 3.0 ports. USB 3.0 is faster and would be nice to have on a system you’re likely going to hold on to for five to seven years. In addition to the usual PS/2, audio, and Ethernet ports, the system has a HDMI port to connect large-screen monitors and HDTVs. This is a good fit for the system’s Blu-ray player/DVD burner combo drive, which lets you watch movies in both standard and high definition.

The last Alienware Aurora ALX (Core i7) had a newly designed chassis with a motorized set of louvers that angled out of the top of the system to aid cooling. They were also an attempt to look cool, literally and figuratively. But Google “Alienware vent problems” and you’ll see a slew of user complains on Dell’s community boards, with several of the suggested fixes involving replacing the vent assembly. So that’s what Alienware has done, by using a simple perforated top cover on this model instead. Otherwise this Aurora’s chassis is the same as the previous one, with the same multi-zone lighting effects, easy-to-open side door, and strange extraterrestrial writing in spots around the chassis.

The p7-1067c-b packs all of its power into a utilitarian-looking tower, with the usual glossy black plastic front face. It has been updated compared to last season’s HP Pavilion p6727c-b which used HP’s older Pavilion chassis. There isn’t a lot of difference in design between the two systems: The p7-1067cb has the new round HP logo (the old one has the rectangular logo), and the glossy plastic front panel seems to float on top of the metal front plate. The media card reader is still on the top of the chassis, and there are a couple of USB 2.0 ports and audio ports behind a slide-down panel on the front of the desktop. In the back, there are four more USB 2.0 ports, DVI and HDMI on the AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card, audio, and Ethernet port.

Most budget desktops are decidedly plain looking, and the p7-1010 is no exception. The black mid-tower case has a glossy black front panel with a four-slot card reader at the top that supports 15 different formats. Below that are two optical drive bays, one of which is occupied by a DVD multi-drive with Lightscribe etching capabilities (the other is vacant). Behind a sliding panel are headphone and microphone jacks and two USB 2.0 ports. A chrome HP badge adorns the lower left corner of the front panel.
