It has a built-in DVD burner, a feature that the Sony Z214GX and Lenovo X220 lack. There are three USB 2.0 ports, one of which is actually a combo USB/eSATA port, which, with a compatible peripheral, can expand storage beyond the included 320GB drive, without sacrificing speeds. Despite its compact chassis, HP also made room for VGA, an ExpressCard slot, RJ11 modem jack, and Ethernet. Security features such as a SmartCard and fingerprint reader are also present. A DisplayPort on the right side of the laptop can stream both audio and video to an external flat panel. It has an impressive array of wireless connections, including 3G, 802.11n, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but the Lenovo X220 integrates them as well, along with optional WiMAX.

The dv6-6153cl has a nice selection of ports, including two USB 3.0 ports, two headphone jacks, a microphone jack, VGA and HDMI video outputs, an Ethernet jack, and two USB 2.0 ports. This model lacks an eSATA port, however. There’s a DVD multi-drive on the right side of the laptop, an SD/MMC card reader slot on the front, and a webcam embedded in the display’s upper bezel. Wireless features include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and WiDi 2.0, the latter of which lets you send images to an HDTV or stream your PCs contents onto a display without having to run cables. (Keep in mind you’ll need a Netgear Push2TV receiver connected to whatever device you are sending to for this to work.) The dv6-6153cl doesn’t come with WiMAX broadband capabilities, nor does it have a Bluetooth radio. The 750GB hard drive is spacious and speedy (it runs at 7,200rpm), and comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, Cyberlink YouCam, HP Recovery Manager, HP CoolSense, and HP SimplePass 2011 fingerprint software. It also comes with eBay and Snapfish adware, dozens of games, and a trial version of Norton Internet Security—in other words, bloatware. On the plus side, this model is a Costco exclusive and as such comes with a two-year warranty rather than the typical one-year manufacturer’s warranty. Costco members can also take advantage of Costco’s Concierge setup and troubleshooting service and generous 90-day return policy.

HP Pavilion dv6-6110us The dv6-6110us is configured with an AMD A6-3400 processor, which AMD calls an Accelerated Processing Unit (or APU). It has a stock speed of 1.4GHz but can clock up to 2.3GHz using AMD’s Turbo Core technology. Populated with 4GB of system memory, the dv6-6110us had a hard time keeping up with its competitors. Its PCMark 7 score of 1,483 was 500 points lower than that of the dv6-6113cl (Core i3) and nearly 600 points lower than that of the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-066A9U (Core i5). The dv6-6135dx, which uses a slightly more powerful AMD A8-3500 processor, scored 1,632 on this test. Results were similar on our CineBench R11.5 CPU test; the dv6-6110us’ score of 1.74 was the lowest of the bunch. The IdeaPad led with a score of 2.6, followed by the dv6-6013cl with 2.04 and the Toshiba Satellite P755-S5215 with 2.02.

The p7-1067c-b packs all of its power into a utilitarian-looking tower, with the usual glossy black plastic front face. It has been updated compared to last season’s HP Pavilion p6727c-b which used HP’s older Pavilion chassis. There isn’t a lot of difference in design between the two systems: The p7-1067cb has the new round HP logo (the old one has the rectangular logo), and the glossy plastic front panel seems to float on top of the metal front plate. The media card reader is still on the top of the chassis, and there are a couple of USB 2.0 ports and audio ports behind a slide-down panel on the front of the desktop. In the back, there are four more USB 2.0 ports, DVI and HDMI on the AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card, audio, and Ethernet port.

Most budget desktops are decidedly plain looking, and the p7-1010 is no exception. The black mid-tower case has a glossy black front panel with a four-slot card reader at the top that supports 15 different formats. Below that are two optical drive bays, one of which is occupied by a DVD multi-drive with Lightscribe etching capabilities (the other is vacant). Behind a sliding panel are headphone and microphone jacks and two USB 2.0 ports. A chrome HP badge adorns the lower left corner of the front panel.

The h8-1010 uses a black mid-tower case with big HP logos stamped into both side panels. If for some reason you’re still not brand-aware, the silver HP badge attached to the front panel will remind you. The top of the case is slightly concave rather than flat, and the front panel is done up in the same glossy black finish as the Pavilion p7-1010.

The back panel houses four USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and a power connector. Jacks for microphone and Stereo Line-in and Line-out connectors make connecting external speakers simple. A VGA port lets you connect to a monitor, but the lack of an HDMI port is a glaring omission, as the high-definition port is found on most other entry-level and SFF PCs, like the Gateway SX2850-33 or the Dell i620-228NBK. Internally, you’ll find a 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive, which is plenty of room for storing programs and files. 802.11n Wi-Fi lets you get online easily and gives you flexibility in stashing the system in a desk or other spot far away from your cable modem and router. Though the Slimline s5-1020 has two available PCI Express x1 slots, and a PCIe x16 slot, there’s still very little physical room for upgrades, so you’ll have to make do with what you’re buying. That said, the system is more serviceable than a compact nettop.

The HP Pavilion dv7-6123cl has a dark umber aluminum-clad lid and keyboard deck, both of which are durable and cool to the touch. The lid is adorned with the requisite backlit HP logo and has smooth, rounded corners. At 7.1 pounds, the dv7-6123cl is considerably lighter than other 17-inch notebooks, including the 8.1-pound Dell XPS 17 . The dv7-6123cl’s nine-cell battery adds an extra half an inch to its overall height, causing it to measure two inches at its thickest point.
